Qualitative Reasoning is a research area within Artificial Intelligence that focuses on means to articulate and communicate conceptual knowledge such as system structure, causality, the start and end of processes, the assumptions and conditions under which facts are true, qualitative distinct behaviours, etc. Humans continuously reason about the physical world that surrounds them. Understanding how systems behaved in the past and how they may behave in the future is a crucial aspect of human nature. Qualitative Reasoning investigates how this aspect of human intelligence can be automated on computers.
